Another photo from Mugdock. The trees are quite spooky and the photo reminds me of the cover of A Gathering Light by Jennifer Donnelly (very good book, btw, definitely recommended).

This was taken last week before I came down with the dreaded lurgy. It was a lovely sunny day and I made the most of the opportunity to take photos.  Mugdock Castle used to be derelict but has been restored as far as possible and you can now walk among the ruins. Craigend Castle is still derelict.  It would be great if they could restore it as well.

{May 14, 2006}   Sod’s law

Why is it, that as soon as you book some annual leave from work, you start to feel ill. You've planned to do a few things that you never usually have time to do, but you can't because you feel horrible. On the other hand, when you have a cold, you never quite feel ill enough to take time off work. Instead you go in to work, feel horrible, and the cold takes much longer to disappear than it would have had you taken a couple of days off.

That's right.  I took Monday and Tuesday of last week as annual leave but came down with some sort of cold virus.  On Sunday, I had a sore throat.  On Monday, I couldn't stop coughing.  By Tuesday, I couldn't really move and spent most of the day sleeping (I had planned to go shopping).  I was meant to go back to work on Wednesday but had to take the rest of the week off.  I decided that I should at least stay at home and take the time to recover rather than go back to work and make myself feel worse.  Now I am feeling much better although the cough is still there.

To make matters worse, however, my crown fell out on Saturday – I'll have to take more time off so that I can go to the dentist and get it fixed.  Husband seems to take a little delight in calling me 'stumpy' and 'peg tooth'.  Why do these things all happen at once?

{May 4, 2006}   Lost

Well, looks like I'm going to get hooked on Lost all over again. The first two episodes of Series 2 were brilliant and I am just as confused as ever about what is going on. Who is Desmond? Why is he under quarantine? The thing that was bothering me most, worryingly enough, was who provided the washing-up liquid and the lava lamp? It's the little things…

Anyway, Lost is one of the programmes that I'm hooked on but Husband is not.  He started watching it but got a bit fed up, I think.  He has managed to get me hooked on other series, like Battlestar Galactica, which I'm enjoying despite myself.  I need to take my revenge and get him hooked on something too.

{May 4, 2006}   Dave the Chameleon

Alerted to this by the SOSIG news blog at http://www.sosig.ac.uk/subject-news/?cat=19 . I'd already seen the Dave the Chameleon concept, but a whole website devoted to it? Shouldn't be surprised really – does the Government ever spend money on anything useful? Well, maybe I should say the Labour Party rather than the Government. However, even if contributions/donations from party supporters paid for it, it is just such a waste of money.

{May 2, 2006}   More holidays please!

Back to work after the holiday weekend – I feel like I need another holiday already. Stress seems to be building due to illness, lack of staff, and lots of faffing over our job evaluation. Oh, and the fact that people fail to read signs informing them that the library is closed along with an explanation of why this is the case. Instead they stand outside and wonder why the doors are not open. I often feel that it is a waste of time to put up signs and notices – people rarely seem to pay any attention to them. Maybe I’m just having a bad week. Things could be better tomorrow…maybe.
